Germany kicked off Euro 2024 in spectacular fashion on Friday, hammering 10-man Scotland 5-1 in Munich to record the biggest opening-day win in the tournament's history.

The DFB-Elf played with a freedom and verve that has been absent for some time, and it was no coincidence that their two best performers were the two players who have been most responsible for their recent resurgence: Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala.

Kimmich was everywhere in midfield, winning tackles, dictating play, and driving forward with menace. Musiala, meanwhile, was a constant threat with his pace, skill, and eye for goal.

It was Musiala who opened the scoring in the 10th minute, finishing off a sweeping move that involved Kimmich and Thomas Müller. Timo Werner made it 2-0 just five minutes later, and Kai Havertz added a third before the half-hour mark.

Scotland's hopes of a comeback were dealt a blow when Porteous was sent off for a reckless challenge on Musiala. The hosts took full advantage, with Müller making it 4-0 in the 54th minute and Leroy Sané completing the rout in the 70th minute.

It was a chastening defeat for Scotland, but it was a richly deserved victory for Germany. The hosts looked like a team transformed, and they will be full of confidence heading into their next match against France on Tuesday.
